Life and Work

February 20, 2015

You build a business and it’s your baby. And then you have a baby—or  in my case two. Time management becomes a much bigger part of your life. Running k studio and taking care of these two has made me a master of it. My days are split between my various babies, and it’s stressful and wonderful at the same time. Having their grandma here every day makes it all much easier and more fun.

The studio looks a little different. The house is full of toys and sippy cups. My work is a little different (better?). Life changes, work changes. One always influences the other.

Our twins are 2 now and I finally feel like I have a handle on this. The new normal has actually started to feel normal.

Awards

October 9, 2013

We’ve neglected our news page.  We’ve won some awards but were too buy to post about it. Here is an update:

Distinguished Alumni Award- Kendall College of Art and Design.  May 3, 2012

In May, 2012 the Distinguished Alumni Award was awarded to our  founder and creative director Shelly Klein by her alma mater Kendall College of Art and Design.

Kendall’s description of the award:

The Distinguished Alumni Award is given to an alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding devotion, significant achievement, and contribution to his/her chosen profession and community.  He or she has fulfilled the mission of Kendall College of Art and Design by becoming a field leader.

The award ceremony took place at the lovely Grand Rapids Art Museum.  The whole k studio crew was present along with family and friends.  A truly special evening we won’t soon forget.

Best Collection Award- NYIGF Accent on Design, January, 2011

We were very honored to have been selected to receive the Best Collection Award by a distinguished jury of design leaders representing the New York International Gift Fair.

We show at NYIGF twice a year.  This is a wholesale show where we meet buyers from both independent boutiques and larger chain stores.  We look forward to seeing our customers face-to-face and making new contacts.  It feels wonderful to be honored in this way.

ArtPrize

April 18, 2012

It’s been a really interesting year for artists in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This year was the launch of a new annual art competition called ArtPrize. It’s put on by the young, creative son of a local billionaire family. The idea is that there is an enormous amount of prize money given away to the top ten public vote getters and there is no formal curation process. Anyone can enter who can find a place to show. Some venues implemented their own jurying systems. I showed at one such venue, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts. (uica.org) This is an organization I care very much about and normally I am not able to apply for shows since I serve on the curatorial committee.
